Joe Avellone, M.D.

Senior Vice President, Clinical Research Services

In his role as Senior Vice President, Clinical Research Services, Dr. Avellone is responsible for the global management of PAREXEL’s Clinical Research Services business. His responsibilities include the oversight of the management of all aspects of clinical trial conduct throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia/Pacific regions. 

Focused on meeting the evolving needs of PAREXEL’s clients, Dr. Avellone applies extensive management experience and in-depth health care industry knowledge. He is responsible for the development of large scale partnerships with PAREXEL’s clients to bring greater effectiveness to their clinical programs. Dr. Avellone participates in many corporate-level management initiatives, and has contributed significantly to PAREXEL’s efforts to use new operational models, supported by technology, to help customers achieve greater benefits through faster execution.

Prior to joining PAREXEL, Dr. Avellone was Chief Executive Officer of Veritas Medicine, a healthcare technology company supporting clinical trials. Previously, he served as Chief Operating Officer of BlueCross BlueShield of Massachusetts. He has more than 25 years of senior management experience in a variety of health care businesses and institutions.

Dr. Avellone is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He received his M.D. from the Harvard Medical School, and completed his General Surgery Residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Avellone also received a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College.

Dr. Avellone has served as a Board of Directors member of several organizations in the health care area. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program.
